4 (+1) Things You Might Not Have Known – 2/9

1:   Pete Rose ($7.1) and
Tom Seaver ($5.8) combined to make approximately $12.9M during their playing
career. Kosuke Fukudome will make $13.5M in 2011.  The value of money changes over time of
course. But to put this in perspective, Roses’ largest single season salary was
$1M in 1986. In today’s money that would be approx $2.1M.

2:   The Cubs open the
season on April 1st against the Pirates. Ryan Dempster will probably
be the Cubs starting pitcher. In 45 career appearances against Pittsburgh, Ryan
is 6-10 with a 5.63era.

3:   I really think
George Clooney is one of the best actors making movies right now. But even a
great actor can’t save a bad movie. I watched The American a couple of days ago, you shouldn’t bother.

4:   76 players have
made 10,000+ plate appearances in MLB history.  Jim Thome (9803), Manny Ramirez (9757), and
Chipper Jones (9654) should join the list this year.

Bonus:   William
(Bill) Veeck was born 97 years ago today. As the owner of the Cleveland Indians
in 1947, Veeck signed Larry Doby to be the first black player in the American
League. One year later he signed Satchel Paige at the age of 41. Paige went 6-1
in 1948 and went on to play parts of 5 more seasons.

Veeck’s son actually worked for the Rays for a few years before leaving the organization.
I did not know the Manny Ramirez fact…That is pretty interesting. Some hope that Manny hits his 600th Home Run in Tropicana Field, since A-Rod couldn’t get his 600th there last season.
I hope he hits his 600th against Boston…but that might just be a beautiful daydream of mine.

That Dempster tidbit isn’t exactly reassuring…
Oh well. Cubs are gonna win anyway.

There’s Always Next Year

I like the Dempster tid-bit it kind of adds some anticipation to opening day for both teams.
I heard that about the American from others too, but I’m not exactly a Clooney fan, more Mark Wahlberg.
Manny Ramirez is probably the only one of those three that may be in jeopardy of reaching the 10,000 mark, know the Rays if he doesn’t hit he’ll go the same way as Burrell went for them probably quicker than it took them to shelve Burrell too.

Well, maybe Dempster will feel he really has something to prove against the Pirates and improve his record. Good to know about The American. I think that one just moved a few rungs further down on my list of to sees.

As the old saying goes: “Anything can happen in baseball.” Dempster winning Opening Day against the Pirates – it could happen.

As for the 10K plate appearances, it would be an ambitious feat for Jim Thome – but I see that happening for him this year (if he stays healthy).

Wow… comparing that albatross of a Fukudome contract to those fellas… wow. Just, wow. And, in case you’re a bettin’ fella, I found taking the underdog Bucs whenever they played the Cubs last year to be a very, very rewarding bet ;-)

Jeff~ Your right, the Cubs were just 5-10 vs the Pirates last year….not good. And that’s against a Pittsburgh team that only won 57 games……57!!!!

Kristen, PhillieO,& CubbieFan ~ I’m really expecting Dempster to have a solid year in 2011…..and it starts on Opening Day.

I’ll take Dempster, Garza and Big Z in that opening series. I’m hoping for a sweep but would be happy to start the seson 2-1.

Kristen ~ Wow. Thanks for bringing that to my attention. It’s my first time making the list. It’s because of you, Cliff, Ron, Randy and others that read and leave comments that keep me writing.

And I see your still on the list as you should be. Congrats!

Aahh! It’s good to be back. You don’t get this stuff on TV!
